The 6th annual ‘Hoot for Hunger’ Hootenanny, Hilo’s signature fundraising event for The Food Basket, will take place Oct. 27 from 3-9 p.m. at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall.

DC of B97 will emcee the event, which consists of Hawaiian crafts, feather lei and quilt-making demonstrations, and a silent and live auction, with food samplings from local restaurants from 4-6 p.m.

Entertainment includes Na Pua O Uluhaimalama, directed by kumu hula Emery Aceret, and the Smooth Sounds of Bobo and Boyson Brown. Also on tap: The Kekaualua Ohana and B.I.G.

Sure to delight will be the old-fashioned shoe shine and shoulder massages by The Food Basket board of directors.

There will be games for keiki and rides on the Toys for Tots Train “Big Ben” (train rides with a monetary or non-perishable food donation).

The fun continues with the evening’s main event, the Comic Hula Contest, where pre-registered contestants vie for trophies, bragging rights and a two-night stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel.

The wacky, wild and crazy performances will get the crowd erupting with laughter, hoots and hollers as they cheer on their favorite contestants.

Tickets are $25 and available at Ken’s House of Pancakes or The Food Basket.

“We’re looking forward to the good food, good fun and good folks who come together to celebrate the tireless work of The Food Basket” said Debbie Maiava, co-chair of the event. “We will also auction off a beautiful handmade quilt as well as some other treasures. Come join us for a Fun Event while supporting a great cause.”
